The Insti­tute for Ion Beam Phys­ics and Mater­i­als Research is ded­ic­ated to the study of mater­i­als and their nano­struc­tures that can be con­sidered for future applic­a­tions in inform­a­tion tech­no­logy and are based on elec­trical, mag­netic or optical func­tion­al­it­ies.

As part of the Insti­tute, the Depart­ments of Spec­tro­scopy and Mag­net­ism invite applic­a­tions as PhD stu­dent (f/m/d) Pre­par­a­tion of 2-dimen­sional mater­i­als.

PhD stu­dent (f/m/d) Pre­par­a­tion of 2-dimen­sional mater­i­als


The pos­i­tion will be avail­able from 1 Decem­ber 2022. The employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to three years.

Working field:

  • Pre­par­a­tion of 2-dimen­sional mater­i­als and their hetero struc­tures with fer­ro­mag­netic lay­ers (these struc­tures will be employed as effi­cient spin­tronic ele­ments oper­at­ing at tera­hertz (THz) fre­quen­cies)
  • Invest­ig­ate inter­face phe­nom­ena, spin cur­rent gen­er­a­tion and mag­net­iz­a­tion dynam­ics in the THz fre­quency range (exchange dom­in­ated magnons)
  • Fab­ric­ate and char­ac­ter­ize state-of-the-art engin­eered mater­i­als and nano­struc­tures for effi­cient THz spin­tron­ics


  • Mas­ter's degree or equi­val­ents in Phys­ics or Mater­ial Sci­ence
  • A strong back­ground and interest in at least two of the fol­low­ing areas is required: Pre­par­a­tion and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of graphene/fer­ro­mag­net (or sim­ilar) het­ero­struc­tures, Mag­net­ron sput­ter depos­ition, Raman spec­tro­scopy, Nan­o­litho­graphy, Tera­hertz spec­tro­scopy or Mag­netic and elec­tron trans­port meas­ure­ments
  • Struc­tured and goal-ori­ented organ­isa­tion of work
  • Good Eng­lish lan­guage skills (verbal and writ­ten)
