About us

The Digital Water Systems research group (https://www.tu.berlin/en/swn/) investigates how digital technologies can support urban water management and modelling and management of human-water systems. Our research mission is developing data-informed and transferrable algorithms and sensor-based technologies that support sustainable, cost-effective, and just decision making, climate adaptation, awareness, and sustainable behavior.

Your responsibility

  • Conduct literature reviews on water demand modeling, demand-side management, con-servation behavior, agentic modeling frameworks, and decision-support approaches for sustainable urban water management
  • Collect, preprocess, and integrate diverse water-use, socio-demographic, climate-related, and policy data to support advanced modeling of current and future water demand
  • Develop and evaluate data-driven and AI-based water demand models within an agentic modeling framework to assess demand patterns, conservation behaviors, policy impacts, and transferability across spatial and temporal scales
  • Publication of the research outcomes in scientific publications and present findings at international conferences and workshops
  • Contributions to existing and new teaching modules combining the domains of data science and water management
  • Support with BSc/MSc thesis on topics related to the project main topic

Your profile

  • A successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields
  • Very good experience in water demand modelling and/or management
  • Very good knowledge of and experience with mathematical modelling, statistics, data science and/or machine learning
  • Very good programming skills, ideally Python
  • Very good experience in retrieving and reviewing scientific literature review
  • Experience in water conservation policies
  • Experience in writing scientific publications and preparing peer-reviewed documents
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams desirable
  • Very good written and oral language skills in English
  • Based in Berlin or willing to move to Berlin desirable
  • Background or interest in agent-based modeling desirable
  • Experience in co-supervising students’ work is a plus
  • Experience with project proposal writing and applications to research grants desirable
  • Good written and oral language skills in German desirable
