Tech­ni­sche Uni­ver­si­tät Dres­den - Faculty of Bio­logy

The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) for History of Botany and Hor­ti­cul­ture

The Faculty of Bio­logy invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons for the Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) for History of Botany and Hor­ti­cul­ture for an initial period of four years to be fil­led at the ear­liest pos­si­ble date. After a posi­tive inte­rim eva­lua­tion, the employ­ment will be exten­ded to a total of six years.

Working field:

The eva­lua­tion pro­ce­dure is based on mutually agreed eva­lua­tion cri­te­ria. Essen­tial per­for­mance cri­te­ria are:
  • the suc­cess­ful deve­lop­ment of an inde­pen­dent rese­arch pro­file and its visi­bi­lity in the form of natio­nal and inter­na­tio­nal peer-reviewed publi­ca­ti­ons and at inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­ren­ces,
  • the suc­cess­ful acqui­si­tion of third-party funds and the initia­tion of coope­ra­tive pro­jects with the Insti­tute of Land­s­cape Archi­tec­ture and the Bota­ni­cal Gar­den but espe­ci­ally with the Faculty of Arts, Huma­nities and Social Sci­ence in which a second affi­lia­tion is desi­red and
  • par­ti­ci­pa­tion in tea­ching in the study pro­grams of the Faculty of Bio­logy and the Faculty of Arts, Huma­nities and Social Sci­ence, also in Eng­lish, as well as posi­tively eva­lua­ted tea­ching per­for­mance.

We par­ti­cu­larly value your wil­ling­ness to work in an inter­di­sci­pli­nary man­ner and high moti­va­tion to work on the deve­lop­ment of botany and hor­ti­cul­ture, with a focus on the 19th to the begin­ning of the 20th cen­tury in the Dres­den area. Spe­cial atten­tion can be given to the hor­ti­cul­tu­ral society FLORA, the Natu­ral History Society ISIS, the role of the Bota­ni­cal Gar­den and its first direc­tor H.G.L. Rei­chen­bach, up to the era of Fried­rich Tobler in the 1930s.

Requirements:

Do you (m/f/x) have an excel­lent rele­vant PhD and have already pro­ven that you can publish rese­arch results in high-ran­king inter­na­tio­nal jour­nals and pre­sent them at inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­ren­ces? If so, we wel­come your app­li­ca­tion, espe­ci­ally if you have a strong back­ground in rese­arch on the history of the natu­ral sci­en­ces in the long 19th cen­tury. Howe­ver, indi­vi­du­als with a gene­ral inte­rest in the history of sci­ence (and an inte­rest in the history of bio­logy/botany) of this period are also wel­come to apply. App­li­cants must ful­fil the employ­ment qua­li­fi­ca­tion requi­re­ments of § 63 of the Act on the Auto­nomy of Insti­tu­ti­ons of Hig­her Edu­ca­tion in the Free State of Sax­ony (SächsHSFG).
