Technische Universität Berlin, Faculty VI – Planning Building Environment – Institute of Architecture is inviting applications for a
University Professor - salary grade W3
for the department of "Architecture and Urban Typologies”.
The professorship focuses on urban typologies, that is types of buildings and settlement at the interface of architecture and urban planning – from an architectural perspective. Research on urban typologies, urban morphology, and the transformation of cities is of key importance in the scientific analysis of the causes and consequences of global urbanization processes, for shaping sustainable urban development, and for urban development policy.
Pecularity of the subject: The professorship's work in this area focuses on architectural and urbanistic design. It develops, teaches, and examines tools, methods, and theories which significantly promote the synthetic integration of knowledge assets through design processes.
Demands of the position: In its research and teaching, the professorship approaches the development of urban typologies and morphologies, focusing on four areas: (1) transformation processes in society, in particular changes in housing and living arrangements as well as demography; (2) new transport technologies and mobility concepts; (3) new working worlds (Industry 4.0 and Work 4.0). In view of the increasingly international nature of urbanistic practice, (4) critical research on translocal and local phenomena forms a further area of focus.
To this end, the professor is required to participate in research collaborations within the Institute of Architecture and elsewhere at TU Berlin, as well as with other research institutions, including at international level.
The professorship teaches in the German-language bachelor's and master's programs in Architecture as well as the English-language programs in Architecture - Typology (M-ARCH-T) and Urban Design.
Further responsibilities include leading and managing the department and its staff; supporting the advancement of junior scholars, women, and diversity; knowledge and technology transfer; initiatives to promote internationalization; gender and diversity competence, and sustainability-oriented action; as well as committee work.
Applicants must fulfill the appointment criteria according to Section 100 BerlHG. These include a university degree in architecture; a particular aptitude for scientific work (as a rule demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctorate); additional academic achievements; as well as an aptitude for teaching. Applications are also welcome from candidates with an outstanding record in professional practice relevant to the discipline who demonstrate an aptitude for teaching.
Experience / capability in design teaching is to be illustrated through (visual) examples or a teaching portfolio.
In the research / work of the applicants at least two of the four main areas mentioned above must be verifiable. As proof of research qualification in these areas, applicants should provide a distinctive profile based on their CV, work, and research concept, and demonstrate their suitability for research cooperation, third-party funding, and interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, that is how they fulfill the requirements of an academic professorship.
Technische Universität Berlin requires professors to be willing and able to assume responsibility for the management and strategic development of their department and staff. In particular, this includes an understanding of the special responsibility of creating gender and diversity-sensitive work and study conditions. The position also requires the willingness and ability to advance junior scholars, women, and social diversity as well as contribute to academic self-governance. An ability and willingness to provide new ideas for internationalization and sustainability-oriented action in research and teaching is expected. Experience of initiatives in science communication and knowledge and technology transfer is desirable.
It is not possible to offer the position as two part-time professorships.
