The NetIT (Network Information Theory) research group, led by Prof. Stanczak, focuses on research and development of new technologies for future generations of wireless networks. We explore not only the theory, but also the implementation and evaluation of these technologies in practical systems and environments. The research group works in close cooperation with the Wireless Communications and Networks Department at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute.
An important strategic goal of the research is the development of novel technologies, concepts and architecture designs for wireless networks of the fifth (5G+) and sixth generation (6G). This includes methods for optimizations of the protocol stack, disaggregated and virtualized networks, development and concepts for AI/ML-driven wireless networks such as online algorithms for robust wireless radio access.
To support us in this work, we offer 2 positions as research associates to start as soon as possible. The position is intended to be full-time.
Potential research topics could be:
- Disaggregation and virtualization of wireless networks, e.g., modularization and softwarization of the wireless networking stack
- Fundamental research on physical layer aspects of future generations of wireless systems, such as (i) smart MIMO algorithms, (ii) intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS/RIS), (iii) joint communication and sensing.
- Algorithms and concepts for AI/ML-based network optimizations, e.g., placement of RAN functions, mobility management, energy efficiency, or interference optimizations, or autonomous networking aspects
- Implementations and evaluations of new concepts in 6G demonstrators and testbeds
- Data gathering, analytics, and processing techniques for next generation networks
The position also includes the supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. students within the research project.
- Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of electrical engineering, communications engineering, information technology, computer science or in related fields of study with very good grades
- A team player who can work with a high level of independence and has a proactive and solution-oriented attitude
- Highly proficient in spoken and written English (at least C1 level)
- Good working knowledge in German (at least B1 level)
- Ability of conducting fundamental research as well as practical implementations
- Solid knowledge in signal processing and wireless networks
- Good programming skills (e.g. MATLAB, Python, C, C++)
