The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute also maintains locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

PhD Student (f/m/d)

The research group Sustainable Land Use in Developing Countries (SusLAND) focuses on the analysis of land use and landscape systems in emerging and developing countries. Based on the analyses, interdisciplinary research methods are used to develop strategies to mitigate complex problems of farming systems in developing countries at local, regional and global scales. Emphasis is placed on questions regarding the avoidance of land use conflicts, the improved adaptation to climate change, food and nutrition security, and the stabilization of the livelihood of family farms.

We are offering part-time position (65% of regular weekly working hours during 36 months) from 01 July 2024 at our location in Müncheberg as PhD Student (f/m/d).

Working field:

  • identification of enabling conditions to increase the potential for protection and sustainable management of Grasslands and Savannahs, with special attention to minority (and indigenous) communities in Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina
  • assessment of existing governance models and institutional drivers of Grassland and Savannah degradation
  • identification of novel inclusive and sustainable (multi-level) governance schemes to improve protection, sustainable management, and restoration of grasslands and savannahs
  • collaborate with scientists from other disciplines to include social, agronomic and ecological assessments
  • analyze secondary data, develop farmer surveys and workshops
  • publish 3 articles in leading scientific journals


  • master of science in agriculture, rural development or related
  • skills in assessment community-based research, social network analysis, etc
  • national from Colombia, Paraguay, Argentina (due to the project aim of support local knowledge)
  • good knowledge of agricultural practices
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary team as well as independently
  • strong interest in scientific writing and excellent command of English

The offered position is funded through the project “Safeguarding Overlooked Ecosystems: Protect, Manage and Restore Grasslands and Savannahs in Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay”. The main work site will be at ZALF Müncheberg, but several research stays in Paraguay, Argentina and Colombia will be required.
