The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Since 2012, TU Dres­den has been one of ele­ven Ger­man "Uni­ver­si­ties of Excel­lence". The Faculty of Phy­sics is one of the stron­gest in Ger­many con­cer­ning rese­arch and third-party fun­ding. Expe­ri­men­tal and theo­re­ti­cal rese­arch focus on con­den­sed mat­ter phy­sics, par­ti­cle and nuclear phy­sics, com­plex quan­tum sys­tems, and bio­phy­sics. With more than 60 doc­to­ral gra­dua­ti­ons per year, the Faculty of Phy­sics of TU Dres­den holds a lea­ding posi­tion in the trai­ning of doc­to­ral stu­dents.

As mem­ber of the Helm­holtz Asso­cia­tion of Ger­man Rese­arch Cen­ters, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Cen­ter's focus is on inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch in the areas energy, health and mat­ter. One of its mis­si­ons is the ope­ra­tion of large-scale rese­arch infra­st­ruc­tures, such as an acce­le­ra­tor based pho­ton source. Rese­arch in the area mat­ter covers a wide range of topics, reaching from quan­tum mate­ri­als and nano­sci­ence to advan­ced acce­le­ra­tor deve­lop­ment and rela­ti­vistic laser plasma phy­sics.

Working field:

The chair will be dedi­ca­ted to the sci­en­ti­fic explo­ra­tion of the pro­jec­ted acce­le­ra­tor based THz and VUV light source DALI (Dres­den Advan­ced Light Infra­st­ruc­ture, A lea­ding role in the con­cept deve­lop­ment for the sci­en­ti­fic app­li­ca­tion of DALI, as well as a strong com­mit­ment to the pre­pa­ra­tion of the Tech­ni­cal Design Report (TDR) is expec­ted. This will also include tasks rela­ted to the manage­ment and exter­nal rep­re­sen­ta­tion of the DALI pro­ject. Before DALI will be avail­able, you are expec­ted to make use of the THz/IR sources TELBE and FELBE at the super­con­duc­ting elec­tron acce­le­ra­tor ELBE for your rese­arch. In addi­tion, a large, state-of-the-art suite of table-top laser sys­tems is avail­able. Pos­si­ble rese­arch topics include THz spec­tro­scopy (non­linear and time-resol­ved) of hard or soft con­den­sed mat­ter, but also the phy­sics of acce­le­ra­tor-based pho­ton sources. With this back­ground, you will engage in inter­di­sci­pli­nary col­la­bo­ra­tion wit­hin the HZDR and TU Dres­den, as well as with other non-uni­ver­sity rese­arch insti­tu­ti­ons of the DRES­DEN-con­cept net­work. You will have tea­ching duties wit­hin the Faculty of Phy­sics in the range of two to four semes­ter hours per week. We also expect your wil­ling­ness and abi­lity to con­duct cour­ses in the Eng­lish lan­guage as well as par­ti­ci­pa­tion in aca­de­mic self-admi­nis­tra­tion.


We are loo­king for a sci­en­tist with expe­ri­ence in high-field THz phy­sics, ide­ally also in rela­tion to acce­le­ra­tor-based genera­tion of radia­tion. In addi­tion to an excel­lent sci­en­ti­fic record, you should have lea­dership expe­ri­ence, the abi­lity to work in a team, and stra­te­gic manage­ment skills, as well as expe­ri­ence in attrac­ting exter­nal fun­ding. To be eli­gi­ble for the posi­tion, a PhD in phy­sics or a rela­ted disci­pline is requi­red, as well as a habi­li­ta­tion or habi­li­ta­tion-equi­va­lent achie­ve­ments. App­li­cants must ful­fil the employ­ment qua­li­fi­ca­tion requi­re­ments of § 58 of the Act on the Auto­nomy of Insti­tu­ti­ons of Hig­her Edu­ca­tion in the Free State of Sax­ony (SächsHSFG).
