Scientific Employee (f/m/d) Research Software Engineer for HIFIS and FutuRSI
HIFIS, as a Helmholtz-wide platform, significantly contributes to the success of research at all 18 Helmholtz Centers by providing IT resources and numerous services such as workshops and consulting in the field of research software. HZDR is bringing the experience gained within HIFIS to the design of a federally structured offering for the entire German research landscape, as part of the FutuRSI project which launched in spring.
With cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, around 1,500 employees from more than 70 nations at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) are committed to mastering the great challenges facing society today.
The Department of Information Services and Computing is the service, consultation and coordination centre for the Information Infrastructure of the HZDR.
The Group of Software Engineering is looking for a
Tasks
- Development of strategies and their implementation to refine and further establish a research software consulting service for the entire Helmholtz Association in close cooperation with partners from Helmholtz centers across Germany
- Collaboration with researchers from the entire Helmholtz Association in the implementation of modern and appropriate software engineering methods
- Collaboration on the conception and establishment of a German Research Software Institution with various project partners throughout Germany
- Expanding and integrating our Helmholtz internal offerings for research software into the national infrastructure
Requirements
- Completed university studies (Master/Diploma and preferably PhD) in the field of Computer Science, Natural Sciences or Mathematics or any other related field with a strong connection to the topic
- Relevant professional experience in the specified area
- Solid experience in sustainable, tailored software engineering with modern tools (e. g. Git, CI/CD, container technologies, build tools)
- Profound knowledge of at least one programming language, preferrably Python and/or modern C++
- Experience in project management, as well as in the development and definition of processes and organizational structures, is desirable
- Passion and enthusiasm for new topics around Software Engineering, sustainable software development, Open Source etc.
- Interest in science policy discussions related to research software as well as knowledge of relevant stakeholders and structures is beneficial
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and written; German is beneficial
