About us

The Department of Transportation Systems Planning and Telematics has developed a model for the spread of infectious diseases called Episim based on the agent-based traffic model MATSim. This model is to be further developed as part of the BMBF-funded project “Epidemic Simulation and Data Service Platform (EPISERVE)”. The aim of this project is to develop an advanced, freely accessible epidemic simulation platform that continuously integrates real-time data from various sources – such as infection rates, virus development, weather, mobility, and social media – into a robust simulation environment. The platform builds on and expands the models developed by the members of the consortium. It will support complex scenario simulations and improve the accuracy, scalability, and depth of infectious disease modeling. The platform will initially focus on COVID-19 and influenza, but will then be expanded to other respiratory viruses and emerging threats to gain relevant insights for healthcare decision-making. Overall, we expect the project to significantly strengthen pandemic preparedness in Germany by incorporating lessons learned from the recent pandemic, including the need for timely, reliable data and a flexible system for sharing and coordinating models.

Your responsibility

  • Collaboration in research activities
  • Collaboration on the above-mentioned research project, particularly in programming
  • Further development of the MATSim traffic simulation software
  • Collaboration with national and international partners

In connection with the advertised position, pursuing a doctoral degree is possible and explicitly desired.

Your profile

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Computer Science or an equivalent field
  • Experience with the simulation software MATSim, particularly with the MATSim framework and the implementation of new functions in MATSim
  • Excellent programming skills in Java

  • Clearly structured and process-oriented working style desirable
  • Good command of German and/or English required; willingness to learn either English or German is expected
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work in a team desirable
  • Multidisciplinary orientation desirable
  • Experience with Guice dependency injection desirable
  • Experience in large-scale programming projects, especially in the design and development of frameworks with a focus on software architecture is a plus
  • Experience in agent-based modelling desirable
  • Experience in transportation demand modelling desirable
