About us

The Collaborative Research Center 1265 “Re-Figuration of Spaces,” which has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Technical University of Berlin since 2018, investigates the changes in socio-spatial orders that have been observed since the late 1960s. The advertised position is located in subproject B02, "Outer Space: Satellite Constellations as a Challenge for Network Space," which examines the infrastructuring of space from the perspectives of the sociology of knowledge and space, using ethnographic and discourse analytical methods. The position offers the opportunity for preparing a doctoral thesis.

Your responsibility

  • Planning and conducting ethnographies in satellite control centers and ground stations
  • Conducting expert interviews with members of the space industry
  • Performing secondary analyses of research data from earlier project phases on urban control centers
  • Collaborating in the organization and implementation of project workshops
  • Publishing research results in scientific publications and at conferences
  • Collaborating in project management, organization, and planning
  • Collaboration with other members of SFB 1265

Your profile

  • Successfully completed academic degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Sociology, Geography, or a related subject
  • Knowledge of methodology and methods in interpretive social research, especially ethnography and the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse
  • Focus of studies or research in Spatial Sociology or Cultural Geography
  • Initiative, communication, and teamwork skills; willingness to work in a team is advantageous
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills.
  • Prior knowledge of social science infrastructure research desirable
  • Knowledge of methodology in videography desirable
  • Interest in visual analysis methods and mappings desirable
  • Experience in international and interdisciplinary research contexts desirable
