This research project aims to enhance optical sorting technologies for bulk materials to handle higher throughput. It specifically targets scenarios where particles are no longer necessarily isolated. In these cases, precise sorting is not possible with current technology. The project will develop improved separation methods to address this challenge, thereby increasing the sorting accuracy and cost-efficiency of optical sorting. Innovative approaches include the development and testing of non-pneumatic, mechanical rejection systems. This enables the handling of bulk materials with increased particle density, which cannot be sufficiently degraded by pneumatic rejection. Simulations based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) will be used as the primary tool. The goal is to optimize the configuration of the planned developments and provide recommendations for the best possible technical implementation without prior experimental testing.

Your profile

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master's, Diploma, or equivalent) in energy and/or process engineering, numerical engineering, mechanical engineering, natural sciences, or a related field (required); above-average results preferred
  • prior knowledge in particle-based modeling (e.g., Discrete Element Method) and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) (desired)
  • basic programming skills in languages such as C, Fortran, Matlab, and Python (required)
  • prior knowledge in mechanical process engineering and sorting technology (desired)
  • interest in numerical and experimental engineering research (required)
  • good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
  • teamwork skills, curiosity, and creativity (desired)
